One of the definitions of the word ALAKAZAM is “an extraordinary and instantaneous transformation as if by magic.” It is a fitting description of this concert aimed to surprise and delight you in the moment with spontaneous creations of music and dance by the fabulous talents of ASC members Andy Nolte, Garry Franklin, Claude McCan, Leila Louise Henley, John McCane, Alyson Dolan, Sunny Shen, Lisa Kobdish, Angie Obermeyer, Clay Moore and Kevin Armstrong.
The Austin Soundpainting Collective was created to serve as an incubator for collaborations among multidisciplinary artists working in the medium of structured improvisation to bring performances, workshops and education programs to the community. Using a revolutionary approach to composition, the ensemble sculpts their improvisations through a conducting language called Soundpainting. This unique sign language was created by New York composer Walter Thompson. It contains over 1500 gestures that are signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Direction of the composition is gained through the parameters of each set of signed gestures.
Andrea Ariel, Certified Multidisciplinary Soundpainter & Educator, has worked with Thompson since 1998 and was an instrumental part of the early development years at Think Tanks in Woodstock, NY from 1999-2005. AADT is the only company practicing and promoting Soundpainting in this region.
